KDM acting oddly

Sometimes after clicking (or typing) in user when typing in my password, kdm times-out or something and the input boxes are cleared curser put back in home position and I find myself typing my part of my password in clear text. When it happens, it reoccurs repeatedly but with varying intervals like the 1st time I'll type 5 chars before it happens the next 7 the next 3.... Ctl-alt-bs to restart X break this cycle. Could this phenom. be caused by replacing the 2 button mouse with a 4 button + wheel or should I be looking for something more sinister like psswd mining.
