Trying to get Samba to be print server for Windows 2000 small LAN. (I can browse and transfer files)
Tried to add a samba user following the gentoo desktop config docs.
smbadduser -a [username] yields this mess:
/smbpasswd: qmaild:201:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: qmaill:202:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: qmailp:203:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: qmailq:204:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: qmailr:205:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: qmails:206:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: postfix:207:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: guest:405:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: nobody:65534:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: command not found
/usr/bin/smbpasswd: [edited user name]:1001:XXXXX
:
This looks like the contents of the passwd file with hashed passwords. What gives?
And I've never been able to get swat to work, despite valiant effort. My samba version is 2.2.4-r1.
I have cups 1.1.14-r4 and gimp-print-cups 4.3.0-r2
My printer is HP LaserJet 5L, which prints OK locally (cuts off the last line of most pages-huge pain, BTW)
Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.4.19-gentoo-r5, KDE 3.01. Parallel port support is compiled into the kernel (along with the PC-style option) |

From what i can tell, theose IDS are reading from your /etc/passwd file.. and my guess is that it cant parse your password file because it doesnt expect a field to be that big ?
Did you build qmail custom ? or was it part of gentoo..
Can you post your version numbers please ? |

Thanks for your interest in this problem.
I did not install qmail. Whatever is in this passwd file is there by default, except for my users. The default list contains things like, root, lp, audio, qmail, wheel, and 10 other things, all of which were always there. Of course my users were also in there after I added them.
I sense this is not about parsing. These long password *fields* of X's do not reflect the actual length of the passwords. I don't use long passwords, and in fact am frequently dinged for passwords that are too short (but they're accepted anyway, even for root).
This is probably about shadow passwords not being enabled, or a problems where samba can't access the shadow password file due to a permissions problem. (I was trying to add samba users as root, in a terminal)
Or maybe I have to use a certain shell, like sh instead of bash. Speculating now. Any ideas out there?

OK, I'll post the solution to my own problem.
This error above was generated when I was trying to create a new samba user/password when not logged in as root. Even when I was in a su terminal, it didn't work.
When properly logged in as root, the smbpasswd -a username works fine.
