I have alsa sound enabled and it works, but when i try to use more than one application at a time and use sound from both, the sound doesn't work from applications started after the first one. i get an error either at the command prompt or from a kde pop-up dialog saying /dev/sound/dsp resource or device busy. when i close the first app, alll the sounds from the other play as if they were dumped into a queue. for example:

start xmms and play some music.
start ymessenger

sounds from ymessenger are not heard and the error message mentioned above is displayed until xmms is closed. then sounds from ymessenger are heard.

i have alsa enabled in the kernek, alsa-utils and alsa-tools emerged and added alsasound using rc-update add alsasound boot which saves my mixer levels at reboot and boot.

what other info do you need?

thanks.

This forum is filled with this thread. You must use a sound server
solution if the hardware driver doesn't support hardware mixing....

You need to use a sound daemon, like arts for example.

ymessenger doesn't play nice with software mixing, ask Yahoo! to fix this, or use something else
