I know this has been beaten to death on the last few weeks all over the internet. but Has someone actually managed to get KDE going without Arts??
Also I notice that if you install the alsa-driver rc1.rc3 and then try to emerge alsa-utils the new emerge uninstals the rc1-rc3 and installs beta-10 what gives??
BTW.. for those mozilla users that are complaining about rc1 being broken it is working fine no issues whatsoever
cheers _________________ if it aint broken..... then... what the heck are you waiting for? ...go mess with it and see if you can make it better |

I haven't seen any other posts about this -- does setting the proper USE variable not work? If not, has anyone filed a bug report?

a few linux forums out there have some discusions going on about it. mainly some users complaining about arts taking a lot of precious CPU's cycles
Some have valid points for example if i wont be using a midi sequencer or doing analog music work why would I need Arts??
also you can tell KDE to use an Outside (alternative?) sound device instead of Arts.
Most users like the new KDE specially with Mosfet and the new IKons (Krystal) but they dont want to waste any more CPU cycles than they really need to. Those are the type of users that are questioning Arts.
Arts is also an Analog daemon while the new Alsa rc1 is fully digital supporting among other things dolbySurround and 5.1 which as you can image for gamers is a big plus
In my case I haven't really tried to USE="-arts" yet but was wondering if someone has, and managed to get everything working properly on KDE
