I dont have anything plugged inot hdc or hdd. is there anyway I can setup linux so it doesnt search for them everytime I boot? Once I get gentoo up and running I should hardly have to reboot, but just wondering to speed that up. thanx

Linux doesn't search for them, does it!? I mean it does, of course, but you won't see it. Maybe you are referencing to the BIOS that tries to recognize your harddrives? You can change that in the BIOS.

Are you sure the kernel is taking up time looking for hdc and hdd? Does that show in 'dmesg', for example?

Aren't you referring to you computer's BIOS boot-up?

I have the bios so there is nothing for Secondary IDE master or slave
The bios boots up then it loads the Kernel. It probes hda hdb hdc then hdd
hda and hdb have drives attached so those go through fine
hdc and hdd have nothing atached so it takes 4 steps for each one probing the IRQ
I have an old system that stilll uses ide33 and a amd k6-2 500

Odd, never heard of that. Try adding "hdc=none hdd=none" or "hdc=noprobe hdd=noprobe" as kernel parameters when booting.
