Hello there

here it is my HW conf:

mobo Asus A7N8X-X (NForce2 ATA133, no SATA)
80GB HD IDE133 (hda)
40GB HD IDE133 (hdb)

with these kernels
2.4.22-gentoo-r2 (tuned by me)
2.4.22-gentoo-r3 (genkernel std conf)
2.6.2-gentoo-r1 (tuned by me)
2.6.3 (genkernel)

I have TOTAL FREEZES when I copy files from hdb (my old disk with backups) to hda, and a more general system instability anyway.

Instead with Gentoo Live CD 1.4 and Knoppix 3.3 (that I'm using to write you) the system go quite smoothly, I can copy GBs of data from hdb to hda in a breeze.
How can I solve? I NEED a kernel >= 2.4.21 due to AGP issues with the NForce2 and Radeon 9200...does anyone else with similiar hardware got the same problems?? :(

Nothing particular about IDE in lspci, and dmesg seems clean after the reboot, it shows the normal initialization messages before the freeze and then the new messages of the new boot-up, but no warning or errors about data transfer.

And about kernel config..you can see it in genkernel, since it's the standard one..I think it's going to be a specific kernel difference or patch inserted after 2.4.20 in Gentoo..there's no other explanation, cause as i said with Gentoo Live CD it all works perfectly from the IDE transfer side :(

Hello,
-X70 to get UDMA 133. Also, make sure you have nvidia IDE compiled into the kernel. I have an NFORCE2 board and its running pretty good. I hope this helps.

I may have a solution for these nForce2 lockups. For about 2 wks I've been struggling with system freezes after the Gentoo install on a Abit NF7. Numerous re-installs from stages 1, 2, and, 3 did not solve the problem. An easy, quick way to duplicate the problem was simply to run ls -R /usr/portage. Typically, the listing would stop before completing and the system would be frozen. Well I just ran that command and it completed after adding these options to the kernel command line in grub.conf:

acpi=off nolapic noapic

I got these options from a post on nvnews:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=23e556ee584d24433fa9d075fb1f8071&threadid=24590

I'll know better if this is an workable fix when I try to emerge xfree.

Do you have CPU Disconnect function enabled in BIOS?

If I leave it disabled then I can use ACPI/APIC without any problems. I have one disk on IDE and one on SATA controller and they are also running great and without lockups.
If I turn it on then a lockup occurs in a couple of minutes.

So in my experience leave CPU disconnect function disabled on Abit NF7.

Best regards, Ljubo

Yeah, I believe CPU Disconnect is enabled. That's a good tip. I'll give it a try.

BTW, the NF7 completed xfree/gnome emerge last nite so the ACPI/APIC kernel options are a viable if ugly workaround.

Here's a site with more info about the problem:

http://atlas.et.tudelft.nl/verwei90/nforce2/solution.html#abit1

Thnks much,

shrike
