I am quite tired of frequently coming across cursewords in these forums. Most people here may not find anything wrong with F words and the like and nor do I. But I do prefer to avoid such words.
Also, it is quite incovenient to have threads open where there are things like...
"fuck the flag", "What the fuck!!!" in signatures or "ban this fuck", "Or you could just look for the lyrics to "Asshole" by Denis Leary. >^..^<", etc.
...when my brother or mother suddenly decide to make a visit to my room.
And if curse words are to be banned, replacing F words with asterisks (at least partially) will make absolutely no difference. So, I suggest replacing words such as the F word with, say, 'damn' or something of the sort.
I'm probably asking for the impossible, but it sure didn't hurt to try. _________________ http://freeshell.in/~vish/ |

You can censor what I say, but not what I think - which it what you really want to.
I say if something like that ever happens I'm leaving in protest. _________________ Proud to be a 22 year old Infidel, GNOME lover and member of LIK. |

I do not like censorship, but I understand people wanting to censor things for themselves.
Perhaps something like that would make a good Mozilla Extension. _________________ What is the best [insert-type-of-program-here]? |

No no. You misunderstood me. I don't want to do any such thing. Why would I force my opinions on others? Why would I want others to be puppets acting under the influence of my ideas? Wasn't the tone in which I wrote mild enough to show this much?
And also, the administrators will surely side by the majority which will surely not want a change. So this ban will not be implemented any time soon, if it will be implemented some day at all. You know that very well, don't you? Why speak of leaving in protest then? _________________ http://freeshell.in/~vish/ |

My question is, why do those words offend you?
Who decided that certain words are offensive?
If they're offensive becuase of what they refer to, why aren't all words that refer to the same thing offensive as well? _________________ Rationality is the recognition of the fact that nothing can alter the truth and nothing can take precedence over that act of perceiving it. |

Censorship has no place in an open community.
- If you require reasons why, please use Google and find the answers you are looking for. This topic has been debated to death for some time, you can make you own decisions after you take the time to educate yourself.
- If you require a forum that performs the censorship you want, feel free to leave this forum in favor of one that suits your needs.

it's because his mother is probably old fashoned and is offended by the words like someone elses mother i know (no offence meant btw)
maybe she does not know he swears.
its similar to this cenario:
your mother walks into your room and your on the toilet or something, porn banner advert at the top of the page, she's offended and upset she knows you look at that sort of stuff would you like your mother to find that stuff on your PC?
similar situation, maybe a mozilla plugin or an option in the forum settings should be implemented for certain circumstances, but not full censorship, i'm oppsed to that. |

A matter of personal taste, that's all.
viperlin wrote: | similar situation, maybe a mozilla plugin or an option in the forum settings should be implemented for certain circumstances, but not full censorship, i'm oppsed to that. |
You are a genius! You found the middle path. Yeah, I wouldn't mind avoiding those words myself and I will no longer have to hide mozilla when my mother or brother walks in, just to not let them think that I like that sort of stuff. Why? Because I don't swear anymore. I used to do so much of it that it left me sick.
So, as Viperlin said, is it possible to implement an optional word replacement feature? I'll go look for such mods over at phpbb.com. _________________ http://freeshell.in/~vish/ |

What is your mother/brother doing reading your screen anyway ? doesn't that make you a little more upset than the words you see here every now and then?
just a thought..maybe you can ask them to respect your privacy? _________________ -merc

Maybe this could be a board setting that you set in your profile...
As for myself I come from a culture ( french canadian ) where cursing ( in french ) is considered part of our cultural identity ( joual ) so I'm not really against it...
EDIT : After looking at that post I tought some poeple may think my current signature as of this writing which is in french could include curses but I assure you it does not, I tend to curse extremely rarely when writing and even less when writing in a foreign language like english. |

That he says brother, to me implies younger, inquisitive brother. You wanna tell a 7, 8, 9, etc year old kid not to read your screen and expect it to happen anytime soon?
The client/forum option I like, it's a good idea, and shouldn't be too difficult for the relevant people to implement.
A similar one I'd like to see is an on the fly translator, some of the <language I don't speak> posts seem like they could be interesting from what I can make out of the title, but Bablefishing whole posts is too much hassle. _________________ My Public Key

From my experience babelfish is crap. Anyway it is when translating from french -> english or the other way around and from Japaneese -> english. |

It really comes down to having respect for others opinions and feelings. This thread ties in nicely with the netiquette thread. I think that all too often people forget that there are other breathing, feeling human beings reading the things that they write in open forums. I am personally not bothered by Non-Disney language, but someone else who reads what I say might be. So out of respect for that individual, I refrain from using it.
I also happen to think that someone who writes a post filled with F-bombs is showing a decided lack of intelligence and wit, but that's another topic entirely. _________________ Behold, The power of SEARCH! |

Maybe you should visit another forum where censorship is enforced. I'm not so worried about what you, your mother or brother think about the word 'fuck'. If you can't handle it, don't visit. It's really pretty simple. That's YOUR right.
I appreciate the Gentoo mod for allowing us, as linux users, to say whatever the fuck we want.. So long as we don't insult each other.
It never ceases to amaze me that linux users such as the author of this post complains about freedom. If you don't like freedom, why are you using linux? |

I find it quite amusing ho offended people seem to get about a simple option. I too would like the option as my mother DOES read over my shoulder 'cause she wants to LEARN what I'm into and such. Which I respect. Also, using linux is about freedom...of choice. Which is why I side with the argument of an option to censor for that specific person. I'd hate to be told to leave a forum 'cause of expressing my own opinion on something. He said it in the, as far as I can tell, nicest way possible and left wide open the option for it not to change. In fact he expressed that he didn't expect it to change at all.
I hope it doesn't offend you that I find it amusing that you say you appreciate the ability to say whatever you want yet tell a person they should leave 'cause they said something. Just my $0.02.

I keep the door to my room closed most of the time. But that's because a lot of people keep coming to see my father during all hours of the day. I like to hang around my family and I don't feel that my family is invading on my privacy. However, this is a side issue. Let's focus on Viperlin's wonderful idea for now...
A total ban on cursewords sounds preposterous to most gentoo forummers, I see (just look at the poll results and all the people giving me hints to leave). Such a ban will never be tolerated here. So, as Viperlin suggested, an optional ban could be implemented. In such a case, forummers would have an option to turn the curseword filter on/off in their profiles. I don't think anybody should have any problems with this one (except those who would have to write the code to bring such a thing into reality ). Please reply with what you think about this idea.

i dont see an OPTION in forums as a ban on freedom, it provides more freedom IMHO, another option for the user, more freedom to see what you want and not want.
i sugest off by default though. |

What's so bad about the word fuck... really what's so terrible about it that people seek to enforce censorship to deprive me of the freedom to use it.
Seriously I don't see the problem, it's just a word, in the context that's important, and that you will never be able to censor. _________________ Proud to be a 22 year old Infidel, GNOME lover and member of LIK. |

Kids will hear the word fuck on the street and they will certainly run into the word on the internet. Do you think all of the internet should be censored?
It always falls on 'what about the kids'? I really don't care if kids see profanity because profanity won't harm them, period. It's the parents responsibility to keep them sheltered, not the public's.
It's funny. The internet didn't exist when I was 9 yet I was already using the word fuck at that age. I learned the word at school. |

heh...I never said I was for censorship...I said I was for an option of a filter for just certain people who would want it. Nothing wrong with that is there? I understand people's rights for freedom of speech and I support people saying what they want. I'm also for freedom of choice including what comes through my comptuer screen. I love these forums and they have been most useful to me...and I hope I've been useful to others as well in some way. It's not big enough an issue to leave or to kick others out over...just wondering if there's even such a tool as an option for some.
I apologize, -Amoeba-, tones don't carry well and it sounded to me like you were quite offended at the possibility of censorship. My bad there in misinterpreting what you typed. _________________ while(true) {self.input(sugar);} |
