ok currently using GnomeMeeting for VOIP but isn't there a good alternative which doesn't require a billion open ports? I mean, if I configure my firewall so gnomemeeting works I might as well just turn it off hehe...

I run Asterisk (in portage, but be sure to use ~x86) with a Sipura SPA-2000 (but that could just as well well be a special PCI card). The Sipura device connects regular phone lines to my firewall/router. I have not needed to open any additional ports to establish working phone service (I have only those ports open that are necessary for basic services such as https, ssh and smtp). I understand that under certain circumstances, you may need to open one port (can't remember which...) to use asterisk.
Check out the following, if you are interested in this approach:
Asterisk for the PBX software.
Digium for asterisk compatible hardware.
Sipura -- This thing rules!!
Voxilla -- great howtos for putting it all together...
Voip-info -- great voip Wiki!
Sorry if that wasn't helpful. |

Right, I shouldn't have suggested that you had to have hardware. You can use asterisk with a soft phone too. There are a list of compatible ones at the voip-info wiki.
