Code:

top - 09:30:29 up 9 days, 15:56,  5 users,  load average: 16.26, 13.53, 8.79
Tasks:  75 total,   1 running,  74 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombie
Cpu(s):   0.1% user,  15.3% system,   0.0% nice,  84.6% idle
Mem:    515328k total,   511064k used,     4264k free,      332k buffers
Swap:  1044184k total,    86092k used,   958092k free,     2688k cached

PID  PPID USER      PR  NI S %CPU %MEM COMMAND
    5     1 root      15   0 S  0.2  0.0 kswapd
 6431     1 root      15   0 S  0.0  0.0 apache2
 6435  6431 apache    15   0 D  0.0  0.1 apache2

 1280  6431 apache    18   0 D  0.0  0.1 apache2

Anybody seen this before?

Also, starting complex programs (like emerge, perl, vim) takes forever, and seems to hang, then once it is loaded they run normal speed. It seems like they are waiting to be loaded by the kernel or something.

Athlon XP1600+, 256Mb, linux 2.4.22-gentoo-r2 (about to go to 2.6.3-love)

Does the CPU-load of kswapd vary over time?
I've seen it go completely wild once or twice (unfortunately without finding out why).

Well, nifty.....

top -bd2 -n 100 |grep kswap > file.txt

will poll the activitiy of kswapd every 2 seconds for 100 seconds and write it to file.txt.

You could run something like that in a background window and track the persentages, alternatively.

I'm having a similar problem with the system CPU usage constantly hovering around 20%.
However, the system load looks reasonable.
