I haven't looked into how complicated this would be to do, and I haven't asked the admins whether they would consider actually using it even if it were done.

Somebody mentioned somewhere that having the moderators clog up the top posters part of the statististics page is weak. I agree. Would there be any demand for a patch to the statistics page that ignored the global moderators?

The only problem I see is the possible encouragement for some 'users' to spam their way to #1. As I see it, anyone thinking a moderators post count is 'in the way' or 'not relevant' or whatever should probably visit the stat page less. I've already commented on post count value.

Bah. I had several hundred posts (>700) before I became a moderator, and most of my posts aren't moderator-related (moving, locking dupe, etc.) Most of them are helpful.

Let me ask a related question. Is there any reason we need the stats on individual post counts at all?

I use it as a default guess of how familiar a poster is with Linux, Gentoo, and the forums. I also enjoyed getting into the top ten, but as I said before in a silly 1000th post, felt bad that it was Nitro that I forced out.

Nope, I'd say axe it. I figured it was one of those PITA issues for upgrading phpbb or I'd already have suggested it. Posts contain the users total, so I see no benefit. Also, that is probably the largest reason the page is pulled up.

It's actually very easy to turn on/off, so I've turned it off for now. If that turns out to be a Bad Thing (based on user feedback here) I'll turn it back on.

Oh...I thought you meant completely wiping user post counts from the user database and thread view.

Alright, now what am I going to do at 2 am? You got rid of the post count! I don't watch soap operas so I have to have something worthless to fill my spare time with. I vote for bringing them back.

I was the one that mentioned splitting moderator posters from user posters in the statistics page as a way of hooking more people because it would make it easier to see where the user posters were. This was a (mostly) off-hand comment. It's sad to have seen some posters like lyx, Zu`, jay, etc.. fall into oblivion momentarily or permanently because they posted useful tips and were in general very helpful. I would like to see them continue to be active and that's the whole point of the post count thing in the statistics page. A moderator would in theory remain active and not need this kind of cohersion.

Personally, I can see how you might want to just inflate your post count to get on the list. I don't see a real good way around this, but very few people have really elevated their post count by doing this. (as of now..) Realistically, there are other higher traffic forums in which to do things like that. I try to avoid that. I haven't posted in the (now locked) 2nd longest thread ever and I'm proud of it. :) Anyhow, I just thought I would complain. It's about all I'm good for at this time of night.

As I mentioned, it's easy to turn on and off, so let's see what other folks say. If most people liked that feature, we'll turn it back on.

I find it ironic that so far there's been only one post to this thread from a non-moderator. :)
Edit: Woohoo! Post #170 - I'm in the top 50 now! :)

That just tells me that people didn't care about posting stats. :)

The avatar ownership discussion has been split to here. I wanted to reply to it, but didn't want to be a bad moderator setting a bad example by participating in an OT discussion in my own thread, which was arguably fairly weak to start with.

I will chime in. When I first started posting, I cared about my number of posts, and not to brag, but I was first to Aprentice  on the forum.
I am special.

But now, I really don't care. I just want to be a Guru like Tristam... :(

I think being on the top posters section is a short lived fun thing, so it should be kept, maybe make it so that only ppl who have joined in the past month can show up in top 10 list? so that more ppl get to be top posters?

This would inspire ppl to check back to the site more when they get started with gentoo.

Actually, that's a really cool idea. I like the thought of having a separate top ten for posts in the last 4 months or something like that. It would certainly be something that would make things interesting for both the newbies and the oldbies. (no, klieber, I haven't submitted a bug report to the folks at phpBB.. :))

I didn't know it was that easy :)

A for the topic, I didn't even know it existed, nonetheless that people actually cared about it.

I posted a couple threads, trying to be funny when I turned into Tux's little Helper and to a Guru, but I really don't care.

I care about Gentoo and the community, trying to help out where I can and generally goofing off in OTW (sometimes too much I guess...)

If people care about the ranking, why not..
But, I don't think it is correct to remove the moderators though, they do give a lot of good answers.

Now, over to something completly different.... Mom... Can I be mod?
