I emerged gift from a user (not root). After running setup, and starting gift with the command giftd -v , I get the following error messages:

Code:
[18:18] *** GIFT-ERROR: unable to open /usr/share/giFT/Gnutella/Gnutella.conf (read): No such file or directory
[18:18] *** GIFT-ERROR: Unable to load config file. Please copy it to ~/.giFT/Gnutella/Gnutella.conf
[18:18] *** GIFT-FATAL: unable to start 'Gnutella', no idea why (hopefully the protocol provided some info)
[18:18] *** Often times more information can be found in the log file or with the -v command line switch.

Here is Gnutella.conf:

Code:
#
#   This is the configuration file for the Gnutella plugin.
#   The default settings are listed, but commented out.
#

[main]
#
#   This is the port the Gnutella plugin uses. If you want to download
#   from firewalled users, other users must be able to connect to this port.
#
#port = 6346

[local]
#
#   Set this if you want to run locally
#
#lan_mode = 0
#
#   This controls which hosts will be allowed to download
#
#hosts_allow = LOCAL

[http]
#
#   Use the proxy server for communicating HTTP. Currently, this is
#   only used for requests to the gwebcaches, not for download/uploads.
#
#   This field must be formatted as hostname:port, with an optional 'http://'
#   prefix and optional trailing slash. For example, http://my.proxy.com:8080/
#   and my.proxy.com:8080 are valid.
#
#proxy =

[packet]
#
#   This will print information about each packet received/sent on stdout
#
#debug = 0

[search]
#
#   Print information about each search performed to the log file
#
#log_results = 0
#
#   Print a line for each result packet generated to the log file
#   This line includes just the number of results in each packet
#
#log_result_packets = 0

This should do the trick. Just do what message tells you to do ;)

I think it works now, and I search for files. I use giFTcurs, and under statistics, what is "Shared/User = 1.2 GB" ?

By the way, after running giftd -v , still after 1 hour I can see it is disconnecting and connecting to servers, shouldn't this stop?

That's the total size of your shared files, which is either files in directories you specified in the root= option of giftd.conf or if you share files that you've already downloaded it will be those files.

This is normal, it's either connecting to other people to download from them or it looking for more supernodes which will allow you to download from more/different people.

Acutally, Shared/User is the average amount of data shared by all users.

Try looking in /usr/share/giFT/giFT ***Note the extra giFT directory

Or simply do a 'locate Gnutella.conf' .
