I used to run XFree with a single Mouse input device section in my XF86Config file, that pointed to /dev/input/mice. That way, I could use the touchpad and also plug in my USB mouse and use it anytime. Only downside was I had to use IMPS/2 protocol, so I couldn't use any of the features of the GlidePoint.
Then I decided to patch the kernel for ALPS support and get the Synaptics driver for XFree. This effectively forces me to use two Mouse input device sections in XF86Config- one for the GlidePoint (using "synaptics" driver and "event" protocol) and one for the USB mouse (using "mouse" driver and "IMPS/2" protocol).
Since I'm using udev, /dev/input/mouse1 only appears when I have the USB mouse plugged in. This means that XFree won't start up if the USB mouse is not plugged in. Says it can't find device /dev/input/mouse1.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can have the best of both worlds?
Thanks,
