I apologize for this seemingly stupid question, however, i still would like to know the answer.

Today at aproximatly 2:15 i started emerging my system. It is now 11:37, how long does this take. 9+ hours seems like a LONG time to do this but, i dont know how long it takes on average. I am using an old Proliant 1600 with a PIII 500mhz and ~ 262mb of ram.

Thanks and i apologize again,
Kigomai

This is probably the most relevant quote for your box:

Quote:
I am just installing gentoo on a PIII 700 with 256MB RAM and it took about 12 hours from stage1 to finishing emerge system (and vim, pcmcia-cs and wireless-tools). This is a notebook by the way, sony vaio.
I knew the kernel settings etc already, so I only spent about 1 hour on that, including the compiling.
Xfree compiled in just about 3 hours.
Right now I am installing kdebase, which wasn't done this morning when I left the house, but it should be when I get back soon (was on 30 of 36).
I would say that's about another 12 to 18 hours...
The other kde stuff will probably be another half day, depending what I will choose...

The nice thing is, once you're done, you can work with your machine will it goes about compiling and updating in the background.
