|
|
Not sure if this is the right forum or not, I suppose it is however.
This isn't a problem I can't work around, but I thought I would bring it to light just in case..
I've had this problem once before, but only tonight did I realize what it was. I have dhcpcd_eth0="-H -t 10" in my /etc/conf.d/net so that it sets my hostname to my ISPs hostname. (with the -H flag)
However, tonight my ISP seems to be having a few problems and as such can't fetch a hostname, only an IP tonight. This seems to cause a problem when logging in. I don't get a 'hostname login:' when I bootup if I don't have a hostname. I can unplug my modem and reboot so that eth doesn't come up, and I just get my custom (local) hostname and can then login fine.
Any ideas on say, if it can't get a hostname it should just set the hostname to the IP? Or the local hostname?

-edit-
Just wanted to clarify what I mean.. I *cannot login* if -H is present and it doesn't receive a hostname from dhcpcd. After it boots the init scripts you get a blank line where you would normally type your username, but you cannot type your username, since you don't have a login prompt. _________________ :: soroh -*~ |

One whacky suggestion:
You could run a local dhcpd server and forward the request to your ISP, then test and transform the reply on your end if you don't get a hostname.
I'm fairly sure the forwarding of one dhcpd to another is possible. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /
