emerge failures. Esp Xfree 4.2, KDE 3 update, Python 2.2-r5

Hi

I'm having a problem updating my system. I recently upgraded to version 1 of gentoo. Shortly after that KDE 3 came out so I thought I would try that out. Using the command emerge --update --pretend kde informed me that it was going to upgrade Xfree to 4.2-r9 (I have 4.2-r6 installed) but the xfree compile failed. I'll get the errors again and when I know what they are I'll post them here.

I thought I would then try to just merge the new kde without doing an upgrade emerge kde But this merge failed on the Qt libs.

I think I have worked it out.

This machine was overclocked. That may have been what was causing the compile to fail. With any luck it will all work now.

This hasn't fixed my problem at all.

It still fails. I just thought it was working because it took twice as long to fail

If anyone knows what may be causing these problems please let me know. I am now completely stumped.

Might want to check if you have the latest sys-kernel/linux-headers package.

It sounds to me as a heating problem. Can you post here your hardware list, including cooler/heatsink? If you have those motherboard temperature sensors, post their readings too.

I thought that when you said "it took twice as long to fail", it was related to the time it took to heat up, since it was not overclocked any more, and compiling indeed tends to heat things up. But now I see you meant it just took longer to get to the same point...

It must be somewhere else, then...

I don't think it would be a hardware problem. I am posting this stuff from my gentoo machine now. I have already installed a lot of this stuff previously. It's just recently it has decided to stop working on me.

I think computers do this just to piss us off

It still didn't work

Everything compiled until it got to Xfree which died (different error this time I Think. It certainly didn't take as long) So I thought I would try to just update the kde files and python and Qt still fail. Same errors as before.

I think I shall just give up for the moment.

Hi!

You might check and make sure you haven't run out of disk space, esp the partition that /var/tmp/portage is on.

Hello. I'm new to Gentoo, and just getting my feet wet.

I've been having some trouble compiling XFree 4.2-r9 as well. Here's the error I get:

I have a K6-2/400, and I have my compile flags set for i586.

Somebody mentioned that they already had 4.2-r6 installed. I guess I'll have to try and figure out how to install an earlier build in portage...

I had the same problem. Run memtest86 to test your memory and find the bad stick.

Thanks for the link! That little program is going to be very useful.

But, all my memory checked out, so that isn't my problem.

I did get xfree4.2.0-r8 to compile sucessfully, though.

I think u should lower optimisations
