Hi

I'm having a problem updating my system. I recently upgraded to version 1 of gentoo. Shortly after that KDE 3 came out so I thought I would try that out. Using the command emerge --update --pretend kde informed me that it was going to upgrade Xfree to 4.2-r9 (I have 4.2-r6 installed) but the xfree compile failed. I'll get the errors again and when I know what they are I'll post them here.

I thought I would then try to just merge the new kde without doing an upgrade emerge kde But this merge failed on the Qt libs.

Code:
/usr/include/asm/spinlock.h: In function `void read_lock(rwlock_t *)':
/usr/include/asm/spinlock.h:192: parse error before `::'
/usr/include/asm/spinlock.h:193: confused by earlier errors, bailing out
cpp0: output pipe has been closed
make[1]: *** [qtextcodec.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/qt-3.0.3-r1/work/qt-x11-free-3.0.3/src/moc'
make: *** [src-moc] Error 2

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 21, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

!!! emerge aborting on  /usr/portage/x11-libs/qt/qt-3.0.3-r1.ebuild .

After this I tried to update the whole system again to Gentoo 1.1a. But this merge fails on the Python update. The last few lines are:
Code:

./Modules/_localemodule.c:564: `D_FMT' undeclared (first use in this function)
./Modules/_localemodule.c:565: `T_FMT' undeclared (first use in this function)
./Modules/_localemodule.c:566: `AM_STR' undeclared (first use in this function)
./Modules/_localemodule.c:567: `PM_STR' undeclared (first use in this function)
make: *** [Modules/_localemodule.o] Error 1

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 71, Exitcode 2
!!! Parallel make failed

!!! emerge aborting on  /usr/portage/dev-lang/python/python-2.2-r5.ebuild

This computer isn't exactly brand new. It's a Celeron 450 Mhz. My optimisations are:
Code:

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe"

If anyone can tell me why these compiles are failing that would be great. Because I have no idea.

I think I have worked it out.

This machine was overclocked. That may have been what was causing the compile to fail. With any luck it will all work now.

This hasn't fixed my problem at all.

It still fails. I just thought it was working because it took twice as long to fail :)

If anyone knows what may be causing these problems please let me know. I am now completely stumped.

Might want to check if you have the latest sys-kernel/linux-headers package.

It sounds to me as a heating problem. Can you post here your hardware list, including cooler/heatsink? If you have those motherboard temperature sensors, post their readings too.

If it was a heat problem wouldn't the errors be more random? It consistantly fails with the same error.

As for what hardware it is I don't know. It's a work machine and I didn't buy it. Can't get the CPU temps either. It's an old machine. The fan is working though, I checked that.

Sorry about that.

I thought that when you said "it took twice as long to fail", it was related to the time it took to heat up, since it was not overclocked any more, and compiling indeed tends to heat things up. But now I see you meant it just took longer to get to the same point... :)
It must be somewhere else, then...

Is it possible the compiler is corrupted in some way?

Some ideas (just shooting in the dark):
Code:
emerge rsync
emerge portage
emerge --emptytree kde

Also it wouldn't hurt to check (both by Daniel Robbins):
Linux hardware stability guide, Part 1
Linux hardware stability guide, Part 2

OK I'm trying that now. I will let you know how it goes.

I don't think it would be a hardware problem. I am posting this stuff from my gentoo machine now. I have already installed a lot of this stuff previously. It's just recently it has decided to stop working on me.

I think computers do this just to piss us off :)

It still didn't work :(

Everything compiled until it got to Xfree which died (different error this time I Think. It certainly didn't take as long) So I thought I would try to just update the kde files and python and Qt still fail. Same errors as before.

I think I shall just give up for the moment.

Hi!

You might check and make sure you haven't run out of disk space, esp the partition that /var/tmp/portage is on.

Hope that helps,

Hello. I'm new to Gentoo, and just getting my feet wet.

I've been having some trouble compiling XFree 4.2-r9 as well. Here's the error I get:

xkb/libxkb.a(xkbfmisc.o): In function `XkbWriteXKBKeymapForNames':
xkbfmisc.o(.text+0x836): undefined reference to `XkbWriteXKBGeometry'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.0-r9/work/xc/programs/Xserver'
make[2]: *** [all] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.0-r9/work/xc/programs'
make[1]: *** [all] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.0-r9/work/xc'
make: *** [all] Error 2

I have a K6-2/400, and I have my compile flags set for i586.

Somebody mentioned that they already had 4.2-r6 installed. I guess I'll have to try and figure out how to install an earlier build in portage...

I had the same problem. Run memtest86 to test your memory and find the bad stick.

Thanks for the link! That little program is going to be very useful.

But, all my memory checked out, so that isn't my problem.

I did get xfree4.2.0-r8 to compile sucessfully, though.
