Hi Guys and Gals

I'm in the process of moving over to Gentoo from Mr Gate's System (the older one...). What I would like to ask is what modems are recognised by Gentoo when the installation first occurs - see I would like to try a stage one installation over a modem, but need a very stable modem first, and right now I have a winmodem (gulp). I tried getting a test driver from the Linexant site (not sure about the spelling there ?). I used Suse Linux for a while, and then did a couple of fairly successful installs of Gentoo on my old 650 AMD Duron - at which point the PC died. I've got a new Mo'board & CPU now and suddenly the working modem drivers I used in the past don't even install any more - not that they were too stable even then. Anyway, I now want a decent hardware modem to sort out the hassles. Now I need an actual name of a good one - preferably several names actually, 'cos I live in that far off place: South Africa, where we fight off lions on the way down to the grocery store etc. Any help here would be appreciatedjavascript:emoticon(':D')

My suggestion would be to trash the winmodem, or any winmodem you pick up. The best bet at getting a non-winmodem is getting an external modem. I never set one up with Gentoo, but a USRobotics Sportster 56K was good enough for Slackware a few years ago. Just gotta remember to set up the serial drivers. TLDP is still usefull for something:

Donj just go external: go serial. Serial can do 115 kbps (i think its 115) which is more than needed for 56k. Plus all serial ones are hardware based and are much much better than usb ones. The diamond supraexpress 56k external was very popular in the day and oftern regarded as one of the best. I had an elsa micorlink 56k internet c which served me quite well (and often pinged 120 ms consistantly in halflife, which is great for dial up modem)

Anyway, that or go with an ISA one if you can find it. Be careful though, there are some isa winmodems, but most arent. If you just look at it you can usually tell (a large black or silver box usually indicates hardware modem, but not all hardware ones have one).

Thanks Kujack

At least I now a have a couple of names to try to find here - will definitely try for serial external hardware, just not sure what is available. A buddy of mine is a dealer, so might get lucky there. BTW I assume you are on ADSL - you talk as tho' modems are a thing of the past in your life - Some people get all the luck - "sigh"

Cheers - Gray
