Well, it's not perfect, but my gentoo install plays some DVDs FASTER than windows, and with better sound to boot.

I am using Xine, Totem, and most of the libdvd* libraries. My DVD device is /dev/cdroms/cdrom1

I am loving this, but, the only problem left is: My DVD drive spits out half the DVDs I own. It behaves like it can't read them, when windows/normal DVD players read the DVDs just fine.

Now we come to my second problem. I have an Audigy 2 ZS and Logitch Z680 sound system, but all my mp3/ogg playback is very high in bass and sounds a bit muddy. I set my DVDs and XviD/Ac3 stuff to SPDIF passthrough, so it isn't a problem there, but everything else sounds...out of whack. I have tried tweaking settings with gnome-alsamixer and just regular old terminal based alsamixer, and the bass problem does not go away, in digital OR in analog mode.

I have a feeling it is my speakers/audio card setup, as windows had really high bass too, but I was able to turn it down quite a bit with creative's control programs and such.

I use the Beep media player, which is basially XMMS with a GTK2 interface.

Beep Media Player homepage

I was under the impression that mplayer had no DVD menu support.

it doesnt but all you have to do is point at diffrent chapters.... i use it and have never found a dvd i cant play

about the music thing, open the equaliser and change the settings.... especially the preamp ( i have it really low) and the 60-310 hrz range ( lower them for less bass)
