I've been grappling with this install now for 7+ hours and have a legal sheet full of "stuff" i've done to get as far as I am. I've already tackled the jdk issue, the gcc issue, the glibc issue and really, considering I'm not an idiot and have followed the docs to the tee this is rather frustrating. All I want to do now is just get this done. I've tried all the suggestions in this thread to no avail.

I did:
emerge sync
then I can install python it runs along until its time to compile then it ends with "checking for C++ compiler default output... configure: error: C++ compiler cannot create exutables" |

just solved cannot find gcc:
nano /etc/env.d/05gcc
3.2 should be 3.3 and 3.2.3 should be 3.3.2
got problem with libstdc++.so.5 now says it can´t´find it so guess I´ll be working on. I´ll post the solutions if I when I find them |

modify /etc/ld.so.conf
run
ldconfig
env-update
and it should do fine
