If you had an dual processor SMP machine with AMD Athlon MP CPUs, as I do, that had an essential function, but also frequently crashed so that it damaged the filesystem to such an extent that it could not be repaired and had to be reinstalled, what would you do with it? Assuming it is no better with any file system (ext3 or reiserfs) and any kernel (2.4.xx, 2.6.x). Would you
1) Replace it entirely -- 100% of all the parts -- with different brands/models?
2) Replace just a part or two such as the motherboard with a newer/different model?
3) Build a new machine salvaging parts like network card, sound card, case and power supply, and video card but replace memory, motherboard, hard disks and CPUs with newer models?
4) Since it is a Gentoo installation and it was built with compiler settings CFLAGS="-march=athlon-mp -O3 is it worth rebuilding the entire system with compiler settings of CFLAGS="-march=i686 -03" and trying again?
4) Something else?
All advise is welcome. |

1. run a knoppix with a stress test for at least 2-3 days (this sounds really like a bad memory problem)
2. run stress tests (badblock, bonnie++, etc) on you drives
3. if nothing happens here try again
4. if it happens again, buy new memory, new hardrive, new board, new CPU in that order (I would try that)
5. Use only parts you need in a computer (e.g a webserver doesn't need a soundcard, etc.), everything else WILL get you in trouble sooner or later
6. if this happens on new hardware goto step 1.
7. if you ever reach THIS point, kick this damn thing out of the window and try something completly different... _________________ have fun

Just replacing the IWill MPX2 motherboard and Athlon MP processors with a Tyan Tiger K8W and Opteron processor solved the problem completely. Thanks. |
