Hi, I have been using my old win machine to connect to the internet and use it as a default gateway for this one! (yeah I know it sucks) well I figured I'd ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem to see if my external modem worked. it did I don't know why I didn't think of it before. I emerged wvdial and configured it correctly. It connected to my isp fine but I get no response from the internet. I don't know if it's a route problem since I used internet via eth0 with the other machine as the gateway. I tried ifconfig eth0 down to see if it worked and when I pinged google I got a ping: unknown host www.google.com and I ifconfig eth0 up and it just got stuck waiting for a connection from the gateway. Any help, suggestions? thanks

Before you try to get on the Internet from your second machine, make sure the gateway is configured correctly and can get to the Internet. Once that is setup and working, then you can begin to set it up as a gateway. There are plenty of threads here and resources on the Internet that show how to do this, so I will not attempt to repeat them here. But basically it involves configuring ip tables to forward packets on the gateway and then enabling packet forwarding in your kernel on the gateway. then on your client you need to make sure your /etc/resolv.conf is set to a nameserver.

Good luck.

r0ny, did you ever manager to fix the wvdial problem? when i run wvdial (for both internal and external modems) i get a connection (or so it says: pppd started) and modem static down the phone line, but no application can recognize a connection, not even ping.

Catach, I have the exact same problem with wvdial. Everything connects just as it should, modem doesn't disconnect or anything, but I can't send or receive data. It just started about a week and a half ago... before that it had worked fine for some time. It really bothers me because I like to be able to connect to the internet on the command line, and kppp takes up one of those precious spots on the taskbar.
