|
|
Hi, all:
Just trying out the new 64bit processor, from the handbook, grub-static is the only useable loader. I was never a grub-person, after following the instructions on grub from the installation guide to install grub in my mbr, and commenting out and revising the content of /boot/grub/grub.conf, during booting I get a "error 18" after "loading stage 1.5" and "loading grub" each appear successively.
my hd layout is below:
1 hd
hda1 windows 2000
hda2 extended partition
hda5 boot->ext3
hda6 root->reiserfs
thanks for looking into the problem,

Code: | 18 : "Invalid or unsupported executable format"
This error is returned if the kernel image boing loaded is not recognized as Multiboot or one of the supported native formats (Linux zImage or bzImage, FreeBSD, or NetBSD).

Make sure then when you did setup (hd4) you didn't do setup (hd4,X) that causes problems, primarily error 17, but oddly error 18 happened to a friend of mine. After I told him what problems I ran into, he told me that he fixed it. It was over the phone so I don't know all the details and I'm probably of no help.
How did you compile your kernel? |

Well, everyone:
I hate grub!
No matter what, it wouldn't work, so I had to do a 2nd Gentoo installation in 32bit and put lilo on that to load my 64bit kernel. Lilo just works, for later references.
