Hi

I tried installing mathematica 5 on my computer system, but nothing seems to work right..

Installation seemed ok, but when hitting the "down-arrow" it says "Why the beep?" and everything fails afterwards.
I can only write in the same line and everything like backspace, arrows and so on fails...

After having hit the arrow-key the mouse-cursor turns into a "hand" and I cant select anything (but can move around with the objects like in a pictureviewer). Even in the helpbrowser the mouse cannot expand the "Further examples" - so what is wrong!!!

I guess it could be something with the keyboard layout or something, but I don't know. I use the "dk" layout, with "nodeadkeys" option.

Furthermore the fonts are REALLY ugly.. They look like enlarged verylow resolutioned bitmaps or something.

Can anybody tell me what is wrong.

I run a Gentoo 1.4 with the Gnome 2.4 window manager!

Ask for info, and I'll paste it - it seems like there are a lot of Mathematica users - that's why I am asking in this forum.

Thanks
Preben Holm

I had the same problem. I could simply solve it by turning Num-Lock on or off. I do not know which one, as I am not on my machine at the moment.

Yes, turning NumLock OFF should solve your problem.
