Good morning all. Firstly thanks to everyone in the forum. This is truly a forum where every single person has been kind and helpful. Unfortunately I am hoplessly stuck with my xf86config.
This morning I started Gentoo from scratch. My x stiil won't start. My monitor goes off, the LED turns orange, and my system freezes. I must hard reboot to get out.
I believe in the Gentoo philosophy. But, I have been at this for a month and still no x. Strangely, the first time I installed and configured Gentoo (when I made multiple mistakes) I had my x working.
Here's my latest xf86config:

Code:

how about posting your xfree configuration file and some info about hte hardware and the kernel and the installed modules for the gfx card?

or how about booting with knoppix and getting the xfree configuration (knoppix configures x automaticly) from there?

or how about using one of the gentoo livecd with xfree on it (i think the american army started automaticly into x) and get the xfree configuration from there?

cheers

SteveB

btw: the topic subject is bad! who do you try to put under pressure with that topic subject?

drwhom,

That post is actually half (or less) of your /var/log/XFree86.0.log log file, not your XF86Config which you will find in /etc/X11.

There is nothing in the log file fragment you posted but I can make some get-u-going suggestions.

You appear to have a Radeon card of some sort. Leave out the ATI driver until you get X to work. Use the generic vesa or vga driver meanwhile.

When X works, you can make it faster with the ATI driver.

I don't know if this is the same thing, but I have had (what appars to be) a similar problem (here's the post. I had (along with many other ongoing ones) a problem with apm, and perhaps some posts there will help you.

Now I don't know if the 'apm' thing is actually what makes your system crash, but I wouldn't be surprised. In my case, recompiling the kernel manually (not using genkernel) and changing the setting for apm support seemed to do the trick (I am not sure what setting it should be on; I would just change it from whatever it is set to as default). Good luck!

P.S.: I have been at this for probably four or five months and I'm still plugging at it (though often discouraged :(). Now, I'm not saying that you are bad or anything if you switch to redhat, because in my case, I can't get X to work on any distro (except DSL, which doesn't count because it is already set up for you ).
