|
|
i've followed instructions form installation guide and there i saw many things about "bootstrap.sh", but in the same directory exists "bootstrap-2.6.sh".
what is the difference between them?
should i execute "bootstrap-2.6.sh" if i intend to use 2.6.x kernel?

I think if you have nptl support and use the 2.6 version of bootstrap it will install 2.6. kernel headers (not the same thing as kernel). Most people now still have 2.4 based kernel headers since some programs don't yet support 2.6 headers but that's changing and from what I've heard the situation is much better than say 2 months ago. (This may or may not be completely correct.) |

Hey all,
i have installed gentoo by using bootstrap-2.6.sh , but it seems to me to be the same as bootstrap.sh
i did a bootstrap.sh and stopped it , while i recognized that there is a bootstrap-2.6.sh
i compared the packages from both straps and did not see any different.
(I compared it in my doped brain, maybe thats the reason why i did't see differences) _________________ just me.... |

If you are starting a new system. I say go ahead and bootstrap for 2.6 but make sure to add nptl to your USE variable in your make.conf file. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

The difference between bootstrap.sh and bootstrap-2.6.sh is that the 2.6 version installs the 2.6 kernel headers. AFAIK, this is NOT something most people want to do. The 2.4 headers are perfectly compatible with the 2.6 kernel and most programs will compile better (or indeed only) against the 2.4 headers. I don't know much about the nptl support except to say that I think in this case you DO need the 2.6 headers.
If in doubt, use 2.4 headers. You will still get all the optimization that kernel 2.6 provides.

It's no doubt going to be have things like udev setup instead of devfs and other such 2.6 treats, once the time is right. It will start off the same and slowly merge into something new over time. _________________ My Public Key
