My entire network used to be all bsd machines, which made running NIS for the passwd file simple. But now I have moved toward using linux on the desktop, and keeping freebsd for the servers, and I would like to still have a unified login scheme. NIS won't work cause as far as I know, the differences in how FreeBSD and linux authenticate make it not possible. Also, I would like to get away from NIS anyway. What other options do I have? Could LDAP be a possibility? I don't know much about how LDAP operates, but from what I have heard it sounds like it could be a possible solution

suggestions? comments?

My old company is doing NIS with Solaris/BSD/Linux as we speak. I was the Cisco guy there so I'm not privy to the details, but I don't recall the admins bitching too much about it. I'd had been surprised if it didn't work since that's the problem NIS was created to solve.

yeah, but the issue with having freebsd and linux is that, as far as I know, you cannot just use the same passwd file interchangeably between the two systems...for instance, if they use a different hash algorithm for the passwd, or something like that. If i set up the user accounts on a freebsd machine, yes, i can easily make a linux system read the passwd file from that machine, but I don't think the passwd file will be usuable to a linux system without some changes

LDAP or Kerberos seem the obvious non-NIS options.

I don't think you have to care about the password file format if you're using NIS.
