Gentoo was a blast ...

now it's time for me to go back to my Elx linux distro. I learned a lot form gentoo. as soon as I build another computer I'll put gentoo on it. thanks for all your help see you next release. :lol:

I'm sort of new to linux and I need to learn a bit more about linux. with Elx I can do that. don't get me wrong I like gentoo and I'm coming back to it soon.

which is good, and Gentoo is a good teacher, as are most of the people in the forums.

Still not sure what he can learn with Elx(never heard of it before) that he can't learn with Gentoo. I'm no guru, and I've learned some stuff.
I'm having fun with Gentoo that I never had with other distros. Sure RedHat 7.1 installed a little more easily, but I didn't learn anything
(never used it after installed either). Having to compile stuff actually gets me to use Gentoo more and try to learn new stuff. Unless I end
up with a major problem, or the distro dies, I'll be sticking with it.

Elx is a linux distro out of India they are doing a good (but slow) job at creating a linux distro that can do all of windows stuff and more.

my advise to you leaving Gentoo for Elx :You will NEVER learn with Elx quite simply because it is a point and click distro just like everyone else except LFS, Sorcerer, ROCK and of course our beloved Gentoo.

if you want something like Elx but better try lycoris it kicks the leaving beeejeezuz out of ELX .

ElX is still beta Lycoris is out cold support and all included.

If you want to learn linux hard and understand the ins and outs of linux from scratch then stick around a bit more if gentoo doesn't do it for you try LFS. the choice is yours to make, mind you, in my experience people who learn the hard stuff first and then move to easier stuff are the most successfull with any nIX.

If you feel like you enjoyed gentoo and want to use it more but don't know enough about linux, I wouldn't recommend any new or non-stable distrobution. I would say Red Hat, Mandrake, and SuSE are a great way to start out, but Debian is probably the best stable distro to learn a lot about linux. The older distros have so much more support that you'll be able to figure out problems that you run into easier. Gentoo has great support with this forum and through its mailing list, but it really can't compete with the amount of support that is out there for RH, MDK, or SuSE. Hopefully it won't be long before Gentoo is at that point. It's increasing by leaps and bounds and is pretty impressive for it's age.
