This should be really simple, but:

how do you get the location toolbar to sit alongside the main toolbar in konqueror? If I drag the location toolbar up next to the main toolbar, it just snaps above the main toolbar... they won't go side by side!

That shouldn't be necessary. See this screenshot, in which he seems to have the location bar in the main toolbar (which I tried but which doesn't seem to work).

I've noticed actually that they do appear side-by-side, but only when my window is maximised. When it is any smaller, the location toolbar tries to remain the same size and so slips down beneath the main toolbar.

He disabled the location toolbar, and added the location bar to the main toolbar. That works fine with the spinner.

I guessed as much, but when I do that, the location bar simply doesn't show on the main toolbar.

You also have to remove it from the location toolbar (and apply it before too, I think)

Nope, no joy. I:

o Remove the location toolbar
o Remove the location bar from the location toolbar (&apply)
o Add the location bar to the main toolbar (&apply)

Still no location bar!

I can't say why it's not working for you. I just dragged the toolbar up. Maybe you need to remove some buttons on the toolbar to make room for it. I tried reducing the size of the window horizontally, and it put the location toolbar below the main toolbar.

OK, I got a configuration from someone on the KDE usability list who had posted a screenshot of the look I wanted (see the screenshot here).

The solution was to put the navigation icons and the animated icon onto the location toolbar, and remove the main toolbar. It's a strange solution, but apparently the location toolbar will hold any icons plus the location bar, whilst the main toolbar can't hold the location bar.

That's quite weird. I don't even have to do that.
