|
|
Hi everyone!
I'm planning to reinstall my system (to get rid of all old crap I collected since Gentoo 1.2) on Reiser4. I've seen patches for 2.6 kernel so there'll be no problem in getting it to work with my kernel, but: will I be able to format a new Reiser4 partition when I'll boot from Gentoo 2004.0 LiveCD (or install cd or whatever it's called nowadays)?
Cheers!

Well Last week on Fosdem; beejay was very cautious about support for reiser4. He told me it's better to wait for a stable (reee eeally stable) release:(.
He said, it would be possible to include reiser4 in the maintain release somewhere next month. |

I tried running a reiser4 / partition with a recent love patch.
Let's just say I stoped running it, or rather it stopped running for me.
Still not stable, in my experience. |

I'm also a love sources user, Reiser4 segfaulted on the 2.6.2-love* release, seems to be fixed in 2.6.3-love* releases |

Oh, that's disappointing.. I was hoping to see it stable soon... Not stable for production servers neccessary but stable enough for my desktop. But when a partiontion stops running without any interaction from the user...well..that's not a good sign =/
Hope they'll fix it soon and that it will be *faster* than ReiserFS (v3.x)! _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

Yeah, that particular issue might have been fixed. But when bugs that entirely locks your HDD are found in beta-version of a filesystem (I supose it was found during the beta-stadium) you can expect (or might expect) another bugs as well (just theoretically, if it was broken once, it can still be broken... ). _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

To comment on a few things, of course reiser4 is unstable and yes it has been used to make a few booting root partitions with love sources.
It is really dodgy right now and major changes in 2.6.4 might help but currently they hender it until a new snapshot is made on 2.6.4 kernel release.
There's been talk of a liveCD, but its difficult because of the touchiness of the fs. I've tried unpacking several functioning tarballs on a partition, but upon reboot each fails due to "broken" init scripts which on later inspection are perfectly fine. Very strange. All functioning installs have been done by bootstraping the entire base install. As soon as I have the time, I'll give it a shot. |
