Hi,
I got a serious Problem with my X or my Radeon 9000 Pro.
Just set up a new Gentoo 1.4rc3 Installation and emerged KDE.
I've setup my X and it starts... but then "FREEZE" ... X is up but nothing else works. Cannot even kill X nor access any console.
I have just defaults in my make.conf except of USE="X java kde -gnome".
Please Help ... |

same problem here, the system freezes when i login into gnome through gdm.. the system needs a reboot then, i even can't switch tty's with ctrl+alt+f*..
i've got a radeon 9600 256mb, asus p4c800 with a p4 2.8 cpu.. i compiled the latest versions, xfree 4.3 with radeon driver and emerged the ati-drivers..
i can't figure what the problem is as i've got no information about the crash in the logs.. i tried it with the 2.6.1 and 2.4.22 kernels, it doesn't seem to make any difference..
any suggestions? it's a sad thing that i can't use my beloved gnome on that cool box |

I'm experiencing the same kind of problem when I use GDM to login to any DE/WM. Only WindowMaker sometimes works. startx works a bit better but also regularly crashes when I put "exec startkde" or "exec gnome-session" in my .xinitrc.
I think this is a problem with my settings in the new X release. GDM also became vveerryy slow to start. _________________ Gentoo's kind community

Hi,
As I had the same problem as you had had, I can tell you what to do :
edit the XF86Config (in /etc/X11) - or -4 -
comment the line
Load "dri"
to
# Load "dri"
It should work afterward.
For more information, can you post the result of
Code: |
XFree86 -probe &>Error.log
cat Error.log
|
If you have some unresolved symbol, please mail me
Thanks... _________________ Think it twice, think it thrice, you never think enough... |

seems like I started a simlar thread didnt see that this one existed so Ill jump on here instead. thanks for the tip X-Ryl669 but I actually added the DRI section to see if that would help so I get the error with or without that commented. I cant ouput the errors right now but Ill post them later. This is starting to feel hopeless. Got any ideas x-ryl? Have you other guys done any progresS? |

Seems like there are a lot of people with the same problem:
http://lkml.org/lkml/2003/12/7/32
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=108729
I tried using vesa and it starts, but the performance is not very nice and I get a low refersh rate on my screen. According to the first link the problem goes away with kernel 2.6. Im considering upgrading to 2.6. Im a linux noob though so I dont know If I'll manage. |

My own problem was solved by fixing my DNS domain names and my host names in /etc/hosts. These had became messed up because the first part in one of my FQDN's became identical to one of the hostname aliases I gave to my second loopback address (127.0.0.2).
So, basically, my problem was probably quitte unrelated to the other problems discussed in this thread. _________________ Gentoo's kind community

Ok I've got KDE up and running now with ati-drivers. The only solution I could find was to install kernel 2.6.3 and X 4.3.99. Everything works great now. |

I had the same problem. Upgrading to XFree86 4.3.99.902 from 4.3.0-r5 and worked for me. |
