Ho fatto un emerge world e mi son ritrovato con la tastiera sotto x incasinata, uso kde 3.2
in rc.conf l'impostazione credo sia giusta visto che c'è un bel "it" per indicare la mappatura.
non so che inventarmi, anche perchè non riesco piu' a scrivere parentesi quadre, graffe, ecc...

Non hai toccato il file di configurazione di X? Dovresti avere qualcosa del tipo:

Potrebbe essere questo bug.
Prova un po' a vedere se ti ritrovi /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp di dimensione zero e/o se ti ritrovi nei log di X qualche errore riguardo la compilazione della mappa dei caratteri.
In caso positivo puoi provare con
