Built amd64 box with Tyan Tiger k8w mb. Using old MSI GForce4 video that worked with the XFConfig with the old motherboard and the same XFConfig as the previous machine. But X11 cannot load nvidia saying,

Quote:
Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel.

Code:
lsmod

shows nvidia is the only module loaded. Anyone have any ideas?

Gentoo was installed from the "universal" CD stage3 and the pre-built "packages" CD. Shall I recompile X11 or something else? Why would this matter?

Did you do a fresh install or just using the same gentoo install as you had with the old system?

Absolutely fresh. Repartitioned a new drive and started with the LiveCDs.

no clue if it is a fresh install. i'm sure you know that you have to recompile nvidia-kernel and nivida-glx after a kernel recompile. if this isnt the reason that its not working then im at a loss. do you have the correct agp controller compiled in your kernel (module?)? check dmesg and see if it is detecting your agpgart correctly.

Solved it.

I re-compiled X11 --> didn't help.

I re-compiled nvidia, rmmod and modprobe'd it. --> X11 starts normally now.

I may have done an emerge --usepkg for nviida, taking it from the LiveCD "packages" pre-built binary. Apparantly there is something important about actually compiling it on the machine.
