Portage - CPU 100% - Kernel 2.6.3

CPU goes to 100% and I start to get stuttering on my 2.6.3 kernel box when I do emerge sync or even emerge -p [pkg name]. This is new behaviour. I'm used to some slowness when compiling but this seems a little nuts.

So... is it portage... or is it some new IDE thing with 2.6.3?

Any other experiences out there?

what's the last thing you changed?

Have you: upgraded your kernel and left portage alone...then found the problem?
upgraded portage, left kernel alone...then found the problem?
upgraded portage AND the kernel...then the problem?

did you keep a backup of your old kernel bzImage for testing?
