The Mobility drivers supplied with a given laptop, notebook or third party video card, have been specially modified to work in conjunction with the flat panel display and any other graphics or video options installed in that specific computer. As a result of these modifications, ATI Technical Support is unable to make a "generic" Rage Mobility driver available for download. Please review the information listed below for these drivers.
You MUST use the drivers supplied with your laptop, notebook computer, or third party video card, or obtain a driver update from the manufacturer of your laptop, notebook computer, or third party video card. For more information, please refer to:
http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/3505.html
If you are having issues with your display, or if you require information on features or upgrades, you should consider contacting the manufacturer of your laptop, notebook computer, or third party video card as they may be able to provide you with better assistance. For your convenience, a list of links to laptop and notebook manufacturers is available at:

ATI Customer Care is dedicated to providing assistance to all of its customers. Our support technicians are experienced in dealing with graphic related issues and can assist with installing and configuring ATI products including the ATI Mobility family products. If you would like to proceed with support you can reply to this email (include the text from this email in your reply) or contact us directly on our CustomerCare phone line. Further information about contacting ATI CustomerCare is available at:

Please ensure that you have installed the latest display drivers for your ATI Mobility product from the manufacturer of your laptop or notebook computer to see if that resolves your issue.
Don't see what that got to do with 64 bit. |

I gave up and got a nvidia card - I've been fed up with ATI's linux drivers ever since I got one and the lack of 64 bit versions was the last straw.

What exactly does that mean if there are no 64-bit drivers? Would there be absolutely no support at all for the card? |

Maybe I dont understand your post but there is definitely support for AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon 64.
Look at http://www.ati.com/developer/altoschart.pdf
In particular Table 3.
It seems like you just need XFree86 version 4.3.0+
PS. Your original email was an automated reply. It does not mean that there is no ATI AMD 64 drivers. It just means that their automatic reply system didn't pick up the keywords necessary to generate a meaningful reply.
You SHOULD get an email from a real AMD tech later. |

Those are just a bunch of links to redhat and mandrake downloads at ati.I can't try this right now but I am pretty sure that they just use the vesa driver.
I wish I had a choice but there are not that many laptops with an amd64 chip around.
Lesa - was soll des denn sei? |

This was already mentioned on the mailing list, but it bears repeating here:
Gentoo has a contact at ATI who indicated that 64-bit drivers will be made available during the summer. I wouldn't want to speculate on whether we'll see alpha/beta drivers any sooner than that.
In the meantime, a reasonably good 2D is stable in 4.3.99.902. It seems to be working well for everyone who is using it (including myself). It's much better than using the vesa driver. I recommend using that version of xfree with the radeon module, or switch to Nvidia if you need 3D.
Maybe that's not the answer you want, but, that's life. |

Have you looked at this thread. It was great help in getting my ATI Radeon 9600 to work, though I still only get 90fps with glxgears.
I used the VESA framebuffer (don't use the ATI Radeon fb), and used the ATI Radeon DRM module from the kernel options. |
