For
1) transcoding
2) multiplexing
3) video en audio and writing
i have always as you see in the title 2 choises. The good thing is there is a choice , the bad thing is what should be chosen ?

Here's my choices,
1) mjpeg (bbmpeg quality and speed SUCKS! actually, I don't even use mjpeg, I use mencoder (from mplayer))
2) tcmplex (I encode to SVCD, if I multiplex with mplex, I'm not able to "jump" forward, say jump to time 0:34:13, this works with tcmplex)
3) cdrdao (after I've vcdimager -t svcd encoded-movie.mpg) |

mpeg2enc for quality encoding
ffmpeg for speed encoding (some issues with max bitrate violation - dunno if _still_ occur)
mplex (for me in PAL land it give much less sync issues at NTSC YMMV)
