So IDE-SCSI has some serious issues in kernel 2.6.3. Can I get gtoaster and all of my other burning software to burn atapi-only without needind scsi emulation??? |

I don't think it's a kernel issue. I have no issues with scsi emultion + burning. But to answer your question, I do believe it's possible for atapi burning. You'll need to either search the forums or wait for a response. |

Not scsci emulation + burning...
scsi emulation + 2.6.3 = totem not working and odd shutdown messages... |

You don't need scsi emultion, period, to have functioning CDROMs... Just remove an ide-scsi from your kernel line in your boot loader... |

2.6-kernels can burn directly to atapi. it's supported by newer versions of "cdrecord". i don't know if gtoaster burns itself or is just a frontend for cdparanoia, though. _________________ please, feel free to correct my english. - por favor, corrige mi español. |

Right...but does anybody know if gtoaster is capable of burning without scsi emulation? I haven't been able to get it to recognize my drives without it. gtoaster is a frontend for cdrtools...and cdrecord sees my drive:
Code: |
blaksaga@localhost blaksaga $ cdrecord dev='/dev/hdc' --scanbus
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01a25 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jrg Schilling
scsidev: '/dev/hdc'
devname: '/dev/hdc'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
Warning: Open by 'devname' is unintentional and not supported.
Linux sg driver version: 3.5.27
Using libscg version 'schily-0.8'.

Read it. It answers your question. I have no reason to bloat my post count. It doesn't make me any 'smarter' or more 'reliable'.... |

I read through the entire thing and there was nothing that answers my question. All that was said was "atapi in linux sucks"...but from what I've heard burning directly to atapi should work fine in kernel 2.6. I have no doubt that atapi burning works in cdrtools...I am just wondering about how to get it to work in gtoaster if it is possible. |

cdrtools is absolutely capable of burning wihtout scsi emulation, but at least in my installation too, gtoaster (1.0.6 beta) does not cut it. Cannot find any drives. OTOH, xcdroast (which I mostly use anyway) works well.
Thus, I guess it is a gtoaster issue, which will probably be resolved by waiting for a future version.

Thanks mtj...that's what I was looking for. Guess I will have to use xcdroast and command line tools. |

if you don't hate kde-stuff too much i can recommend "k3b" until gtoaster works. _________________ please, feel free to correct my english. - por favor, corrige mi español. |

Code: |
localhost root # emerge k3b -p
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] app-cdr/cdrdao-1.1.7-r3 [1.1.7-r1]
[ebuild N ] media-libs/a52dec-0.7.4
[ebuild N ] media-libs/libmpeg3-1.5.2

[ebuild N ] media-video/mjpegtools-1.6.1.90-r1
[ebuild N ] dev-libs/lzo-1.08

[ebuild N ] media-sound/normalize-0.7.6-r1

As much as I would love to install kdebase just for one app I think I will pass! |

Have xcdroast emerged...just never played with it much. I always liked the way gtoaster was set up for burning music. I'll have to give xcdroaster a whirl. |

gtoaster works fine with atapi burning, I've used it with no prob.... you need to either set your burner device to 1,0,0 in your case, or /dev/<burnerdevice>
I forget which, I haven't used it in a while, using bashburn now. |

Woot got gtoaster to work. What I did was add my cd writer manually (not using scanbus) and setting
device file = /dev/hdc
scsi id = /dev/hdc
mountpoint = /mnt/cdrom
Where /dev/hdc is your cdrom drive. For those of you that have "atapi: x,x,x" instead of /dev/hdc it should work also.
It tosses out a crapload of warnings but it works...great. |

Hello!
I installed cdrtools and xcdroast, configured xcdroast via the gui that pops up (setup).
anyway, when I saved the configuration, I get this warning that says that using an ATAPI device as my CD-writer is not a recommended setup, that I will experience long delays within xcdroast, and have crappy writing performance. (compared to scsi emulation)
Now, was I missinformed when I heard that using ATAPI instead of scsi-emulation would increase performance?
or is this just something that appends to xcdroast?
Thanks _________________ PCs nearly always come with Microsoft Windows as their operating systems, but the "OS," as it is called, can be changed to a non-Microsoft operating system with a little work. |
