Trying to install 2004 on an emachines 680x laptop. I compiled the kernel but there is not mkintrd and it's masked. Cannot find any clues as to how to unmask. Genkernel makes a kernel that is unusable but creates an initrd image.

Why would mkintrid be masked? It's needed to make the intrid image.

The online manuals are poor in their information and help. The install forum and searching the forums has not yeild any infomration.

This is getting frustrating....

I do have Suse 9.0 32 bit running on this system and am testing Suse 9.0 64bit.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure there is some special instructions for intalling on the 6000series emachines. Have a read of

http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/index.xml?part=2&chap=5

Use the LIVE CD Kernel.

I had already printed that page out. I have reinstalled the system in the partition that I have set aside. Have been able to get it to boot without the initrd image, but even with the usb included in the kernel I still get the keyboard error.

I had tried to use the livecd kernel, but it came up askind for the hd partition and did not want to boot it. It did boot my suse32 partition.

Interestingly, I compiled the kernel manually like you but I could not boot the kernel.

Make sure you use the genkernel emachines parameter stated here. Works for me but I still need to figure out why ethernet isnt working.
