|
|
So I'd like to install Gentoo on my new al pb.
the new 2004.0 live cd boots fine.
Do I need to wipe OSx to install gentoo? Can I just install it on a partation created behind Osx like a dual boot win/gentoo x86 machine ? If so how ?
I guess I'm just not quite ready to wipe the disk on my new "toy". But is that the only way to install gentoo on my PB? |

hell no :p
use parted to resize your disk and create the linux partitions...
works like a charm, don't forget to configure yaboot!!!!!

so parted worked great. got gentoo all installed, very nice.
but re yaboot. where di you put the bootstrap partition ? I can't seem to lop off anything from the front of ths OSx partition. (not really surprising) can I delete any of those mac partitions at the front and put it there ?
thanks.

Unless I'm mistaken, you can put the boostrap after the OSX stuff, if you like.
When I installed OSX originally, I had 3 60GB partitions spread over 2 drives. I erased one of the partitions (made it 'free space') and used mac-fdisk to divide it appropriately for gentoo - works great, I just have to remember that the linux partitions are down at /dev/hdb9 and beyond. _________________ Osmos.org

well you can make it last, then use the r option in mac-fdisk to define it as the second partition on the disk, even though its physically at the end, works great.
all installed and running nicely now, thanks all!!!! |

Hmmm - it may be because my second hard drive only has Classic on the first bootable partition, and I never had to touch my primary drive. Interesting how a complex hard drive layout actually made things simpler. Heh. _________________ Osmos.org

I was also interested in this subject so I checked the gnu parted website. It has a list of all the file systems it supports and what it can do to each (i.e. resize etc). The entry for HFS said that parted was only able to detect it and not resize or anything else. There was also no entry for HFS+. What am I missing here...?
If parted can resize HFS+ partitions, is it included on any of the Gentoo 2004. livecds or must I download the bootable image from the gnu parted website?

parted will resize hfs+, no problem. At lest it did on my PB and I can still boot OSx.
Its on the 2004.0 live cd. just type:
# parted <device name>
Oh I had to take a few deep breaths first |

Just to chime in here and reassure you, I'm now typing this from a brand new gentoo install on a 14" ibook g4 that I used parted on without a problem (and I used the deep breaths too - I think they must really help ) _________________ move along, move along... nothing to see here |

Me too - I also non-destructively resized an HFS+ part using parted. (ibook G4) |

Well I already wiped OS X from my computer, I have it backed up though so I'm not overly worried... but here is my issue. I can't create more than 3 partitions. how do I get past hda5?
I have the boostrap, the boot, swap, and "Free space" but I want to create one for home as well... and possibly two more... One of those two will be for the cloning of the OS X disk image, but still... |
