Can I install from source in gentoo or i have to create an ebuild?
Is there some software to automize this creating
I had some problems
emerge -f xfree ended with error: I can't remember the error message but
there was something with !bindist? doesn't exists, 3 or 4 times.
where can i find the corect ebuild? |

Almost everything emerged is installed from sources. You usually don't write the ebuilds yourself, but instead download them using emerge sync.
It's also useful to emerge mirrorselect and run it, to select the nearest mirrors for quicker downloads. |

sorry, my fault.
I know that i do it with emerge sync but what if i want to install something thar hasn't ebuild (for example samba 3.0) can i install from source like
./configure , make ....
or do i have to make ebuild first? |

@Janko33: hey it's still Linux! Of course You can do many of the things You were used to do in other distros. Feel free to install whatever You want, whereever You want. But be aware, that this also leaves You alone with the responsibility how to deinstall or upgrade this stuff. If You are able to write an emerge-build for software, which hasn't one yet, You can be sure of lots of appreciation

BTW Samba 3.0 (-soe patch or other) does indeed have an ebuild.... but because technically Samba 3 is still a beta app not for production it is masked with the ~86 KEYWORD ... you will need to specifically accept that keyword to emerge samba 3 |
