kdm config

I'm having problems configuring kdm. Doesn't matter what I set in kcontrol for the login manager, the login screen stayes the same. However, changes made in kcontrol are kept when I re-open it. After doing some checking, it appears that kcontrol is only modifying the settings in /usr/kde/3.1, as opposed to /usr/kde/3.2. Is there any way to fix that?
