OK, Here is what I have done so far.
1) Hard disk orientation
/dev/hda1 :- Windows Partition
/dev/hda2 :- /boot (ext3)
/dev/hda3 :- swap
/dev/hda4 :- Extended
/dev/hda5 :- /etc (reiserfs)
/dev/hda6 :- /var ( -- '' ----)
/dev/hda7 :- /tmp ( ext3)
/dev/hda8 :- / (reiserfs)
All proper entries in fstab. Order of loading swap /etc , /var /tmp and finally / (ie. root)
/boot is not loaded .
Also loaded are
tmpfs (/dev/shmem) and /proc and /sys (sysfs) and devpts (/dev/devpts)
2) Installation method
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
Booted using 2.6 liveCD, and bootstrap-2.6.sh
Then installed 2.6.3-rc1
Kernel options selected properly including support for udev , lm_sensors ,
bootsplash , reiserfs , alsa , hotplug , framebuffer, vesa etc.
3) Read the forum threads in Doc. tips and tricks for UDEV , bootsplash , lm_sensors etc
Successfully compiled and installed the kernel.
Emerged udev hotplug reiserfsprogs bootsplash lm-sensors and did respective setup of them and added to proper run level.
Properly configured Grub for bootsplash and nodevfs (ie udev)
Then added proper modules to the autoload file and ran
modules-update.
This is where I get first error
Quote: | Warning : - can't generate /etc/modprobe.conf |
--------------------------------------------
NOW the problem after booting,
The kernel starts to boot, the first error message I get is from alsa saying no sound card found. But this is not a big deal right now.
Then an error message
Quote: | RAMDISK : Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0 |
then some other stuff goes on .
Then error message
Quote: | INIT : No inittab file found |
After this some other initialization, and the boot hangs.
i.e. No login prompt.
If I press Ctrl-C , I get a propmt
If I enter 3, I get
"No more processes in this run level" and then it truely HANGS. i.e. only hard reboot.
ANY help guys[/quote] |

It's a big trouble if you don't have an inittab file... there are also no services on runlevel 3...
I think your /etc/ is messed up: no inittab, no modules file, no runlevels...
Boot with the LiveCD again and check that things are in order in there... also make sure that you emerged system correctly. |

Well I , think the problem is /etc is not being mounted at boot time.
So I copied the /hda/dev5 (original /etc) contents on to /etc directory on root disk.
Now I can boot. |
