Help with soundcard

Hi, I am completely new to linux, with little programming skill and I am unable to get my soundcard working. It is a soundblaster extigy. The only thing that I have done to try to solve with was installing alsa, but I have no idea what to do now. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

what is your kernel ? your sound card ?

i'm running the 2.4.25 kernel, and have heard that you can't upgrade to the 2.6 if you did a stage three install, which i did. It is a soundblaster extigy, external and usb.
