Hi !
I'm a complete noob with Gentoo.
I have been running other Linux-dists for the past ~ 8 years or so.
I completed a fresh stage1 install of 2004.0
My problem is it doesn't like my ICH5-SATA controller.
I have 1 HDD connected to the SATA controller and 1 ATAPI CD-rom connected to the regular IDE controller.
I've tried gentoo-dev-sources and gentoo-sources.
I even copied my .config from my working Lunar-linux install and did a "make oldconfig" to no avail.
It won't detect my hdd at all during boot up if I have my SATA set to AUTO in BIOS-setup, (which works perfectly in RedHat and Lunar)
If I set it to SATA-only it detects my hdd, but doesn't boot all the way up.
The strange thing is the Live-CD works without any problems.
Where can I get the .config that was used to build the 2.4.24 kernel on the Live-CD ?
So whats up with this, is Gentoo using any unofficial kernel patches I should know about ?
Regards.

when i remember right the 2.6.3 series of the ck-sources have sata support (device drivers->scsi support->sata). i'm not sure, but you could try it. you could also try building your kernel with 'genkernel'. this is a script that auto-configs a kernel for your hardware. i'm not familiar with it, but you can search the forums for that.

If you boot to the livecd check under /proc/config or /proc/config.gz. It might be there. _________________ Tell your ISP to support SPF/SASL AUTH (http://spf.pobox.com) today! |

Try mm-sources. It have a great patchset and also sata support. You are an advansed linux user as i see so you better don't use genkernel... |

I agree. If you have the knoweldge to avoid using genkernel do so. It will save you some headache and allow you to troubleshoot easier. _________________ Tell your ISP to support SPF/SASL AUTH (http://spf.pobox.com) today! |

Thanx guys.
mm-patchset runs beautifully, when I finally figured out my HDD was now on /dev/sda instead of /dev/hda (first 2.6.x kernel I have used )
Now it's time to figure out what Gentoo can really do
One more question though.
If I were to change some optimizations in /etc/make.conf , is there a command to do a full recursive recompile of everything I have installed like "make buildworld" which you can do on FreeBSD ?
Regards.
