I am using firefox in XFCE4. I don't have KDE or GNOME installed.

I was wondering how to set up java web start (java is already working) and how to setup a url-handler with firefox so I can assign applications to protocols (ex: when i click on an irc:// link it should pass the info to xchat).

I can tell you with Firefox, but I don't know about other browsers.

First, you need sun-jdk. I don't think blackdown has JWS (though I could be wrong, I can't find it).

Now, once you have that, go to a web page with a JWS link. Such as the Web Start link on this page:
http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/index.html

When you click the link, Firefox will prompt you for what you want to do with the file. Check open, and chose Other. Then tell it to use:

/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.03/jre/javaws/javaws

Make sure you select "Do this automatically for files like this from now on." That will make the association permanent.

Hope that helps.
