Have got a 3ware card configured.
When I use the livecd modprobe 3w-xxxx works fine
When I install gentoo succesfully compile the kernel using menuconfig
(not genkernel, could not get it to work)
and try to boot the kernel I get the following error.
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe s k scsi_hostadapter errno = 2
has anybody got any ideas on what I am doing wrong ?
Surprise 3Ware does not provide any support at all.
They were OK providing info until I bought the board,
maybe I should start phrasing my questions differenctly in future |

IIRC, you'll get this error message if you don't have generic scsi device compiled into the kernel. No modules, must be compiled in if you're booting from the drive attached to the 3ware card.

A bit surprised about your answer,
did have SCSI support inside the kernel
have found this series of links:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=67808&highlight=hpt374

they appear to claim I need to setup initrd in a specific way,
actually going through the process of trying it now
Doing this with kernel 2.4.22-gentoo-r5 gs-sources,
there might be some difference in case you take one of the early 2.6 kernels |

Well, SCSI support and SCSI emulation support are in two different places in the 2.6.3 kernel. That's what I'm using. I had SCSI support enabled, but not SCSI emulation support and that was my problem.
Many apologies for the confusion!

have tried the initrd thing yesterday,
had some problems with it.
Going forward it might be a better move to go to 2.6.3. if this one does not need the initrd manopulation. This server has to go on a dark site.
This may be off topic but have you got any idea if the gs-sources are available for 2.6.3 ??? |

I don't use initrd on my system with the 3Ware cards. I'm sure there's a good reason to use initrd, but I can't seem to find it!

have got it all booting properly now.
Don't have everything else working,
guess there is some more fun ahead,
but these are on a different topic |
