I have been trying for a long time but dispite my best efforts i am unable to network my gentoo system with my xp pro system. I think the problem is with the setup of my XP system though. When i ping my gentoo ip i get a response however when i ping my xp machine from gentoo i get nothing. This is obviously a problem any suggestions on settings that might be causing my problems in windows. Thanks |

Maybe your xp firewall is on? It drops icmp-echo by default ... |

Nope - never "nothing".
Describe the exact error or message - it helps. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

What i ment by nothing was when i ping my machine, i get no response. However if i ping my linux box from my windows machine it responds.
The firewall is definilty off though. so i can't figure out why nothing is getting to it |

Produce the output of the ping command, and the contents of your Linux routing table:

Is there another machine you can use to ping the XP box?
In the cases that I have seen where machine A could ping B, but machine B couldn't ping A (and no firewall exists, network setup is correct, etc.) the NIC in machine B was usually bad. Try swapping out the NIC in the XP box and see if that helps.
Make sure the cables are good. I have seen instances where the cables are marginal, and you get one-way communication like that.
Also, make sure your subnet masks are the same. Sometimes, if you use something like 255.255.0.0 on machine A, and 255.255.255.0 on machine B, machine A can ping B, but B won't be able to ping A (machine B is on A's network, but A isn't on B's network.) |
