Hi,
I'm a newbie, using the 2004.0 2-CD set, trying to do a network-less
gentoo install. I first booted the 1st CD with my network cable
plugged into the machine, but I did a shutdown -r before I got to the
step to install kernel sources because I needed to plug my tcp/ip cable
back into my main computer to access the net.

On subsequent boots, I execute the steps in the Gentoo install manual
for the 2-CD set, for a stage3 install, and all seems to go well until
I do "emerge gentoo-dev-sources". Then I get
-------------------
Calculating dependencies ... done!
>>> emerge (1 of 3) dev-libs/ucl-1.01-r1 to /
>>> Downloading http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/distfiles/ucl-1.01.tar.gz
--08:33:38-- http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/distfiles/ucl-1.01.tar.gz
=> '/usr/portage/distfiles/ucl-1.01.tar.gz'
Resolving gentoo.oregonstate.edu... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.
... then it tries and fails from 2 other sites.
-------
Like a mongoose (I just read the faq on posting), I re-booted and
erased the lines in /etc/resolv.conf, hoping it would make gentoo NOT
try the network download.

On my / directory (I have chrooted to it, per the instructions) I did
a find and I have:
./usr/portage/metadata/cache/dev-libs/ucl-1.01-r1
./usr/portage/metadata/cache/dev-libs/ucl-1.01
./usr/portage/dev-libs/ucl/ucl-1.01-r1.ebuild
./usr/portage/dev-libs/ucl/ucl-1.01/ebuild
./var/tmp/portage/ucl-1.01-r1
./var/cache/edb/dep/dev-libs/ucl-1.01

So it seems I have a wealth of ucl stuff, but the emerge command
seems not to use it, rather it tries to visit the WWW (even though I
had rebooted with the tcp/ip cable not plugged into the machine).
So... I am a complete newbie to emerge, gentoo, portage... etc...
is there some simple fix? Maybe I have some setting in some conf
file somewhere that says I want to use the network?

Thanks for any advice!

Have you tried with emerge -k gentoo-dev-sources? What is the output of emerge -pv gentoo-dev-sources?

Thanks for your tips. I did just try emerge -k and I get the
same output. The output of emerge -pv gentoo-dev-sources is:
---------------
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] dev-libs/ucl-1.-1-r1 333 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-apps/module-init-tools-0.9.15_pre4 344 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.3-r1 -build 33,863 kB

Total size of downloads: 34,541 kB.
-----------------

I did an echo $PKGDIR and got NULL.
Then, I tried: #export PKGDIR=/usr/portgage
#emerge -k gentoo-dev-sources,
and I got the failed attempts to download the packages from the same
web sites.

Note: If you are familiar with the Gentoo Installation Manual, I am working
from a printout I made last Friday. I was puzzling over section
6.e Optional: Preparing for GRP.
It says if I booted from a x86 or ppc CD-1 LiveCD I can skip this
section, but if I am booted from a different architecture LiveCD, I should
copy the GRP packages. My CD is the first of a 2-CD set, for the x86
architecture (and CD2 is for the x486)... so I wasn't clear whether I
should try to Copy the GRP packages. I did just try to follow the
procedures for it, but when I hit Alt-F2 I get a login prompt and I
type "root" and no password, and it won't let me login. Then I hit
Alt-F1 and on that console I set the root password to something, then
I try Alt-F2 again, and that console rejects my newly defined password,
so I see no way to open the second console anyway... but I'm not
sure if I need to do this anyway....

Thanks for any (more) advice!
