Is there a reason why using one or the other(xfree-drm or ati-drivers) would cause a problem w/2.4 X operation? These are my issues:
1) On an HP Pavillion N5170 Pentium III laptop with a Savage graphics card, after adding a non-root user(mark, in this case), I cannot log into X/GNOME with that user.
The messages in the xsessions-errors file are:
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession//Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession//Default: running: sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l :0 mark
2) On an HP Pavillion 4600 series AMD XP laptop w/an ATI Radeon 4X AGP graphics card, after adding a non-root user(mark), I can successfully log in, but once I log out, X either freezes up(with the clock symbol) or X eventually goes back to the GDM login screen, but I can't type anything. At this point, I cannot even kill X with "ctl-alt-backspace". I have to remove my battery from the laptop(pain in the @#$)
So, I am assuming that there is either a driver issue or something in the XF86Config file that is incorrect.
If anyone has experienced something similar and has a fix, would you please send it my way!!!
Thanks in advance,
MC

I don't know what is going on with problem number 1, but problem number two sounds like a symptom of the crappy ati-drivers. I use kdm, and I forget exactly how it manifests itself, but I remember that if I log out, I have to reboot before X will work properly again. You might want to try the ati-drivers that just came out (I haven't had a chance to try them yet, so I don't know if they will help). I am definitely not a fan of ati's drivers, I just wish I had been paying more attention when I ordered my laptop. |
