I'm trying to figure out how to setup clamav to scan attachments coming into sylpheed-claws. I'm certain that it is possible as others do it, but I can't seem to find directions for it. Has any other gentooist done it and might be willing to point me in the right direction? I haven't even been able to find a download for the plugin or where it might be on my system.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

Its quite simple. First you need to make sure that clamav is emerged. Then you need to emerge sylpheed-claws with "clamav" in either your USE flags or in your make.conf.

Once that is done, load up sylpheed-claws and select
"configuration" and then "plugins"

A window will pop up, click on "load plugin".
You now need to specify where your clamav plugin is.

On my system the plugins were in /usr/lib/sylpheed-claws/plugins

You need to load two files. clamav_plugin.so which is the actual plugin. Then you need to click on load again and load clamav_plugin_gtk.so
This is the GTK configuration interface.
Once this is done you should see in your plugin list that there are two entries.
"Clam AntiVirus" and "Clam AntiVirus GTK"

By the way, this procedure is the same for all sylpheed-claws plugins, i.e. image viewer, spamassasin, html viewer, etc.

Now the plugins are loaded. Now all you need to do is to configure the clamav plugin.

Close any open dialogs. Then click on "Configuration" again and then click on "Other Preferences".
Here you should that there is an entry for clamav.
I think the options there should be self-explanatory.

Thank you much, that's precisely what I needed. I hadn't yet figured out the directory the plugin was in. For some reason locate didn't pull that up. Probably another problem I should look into. :-)

locate will only show you the correct stuff if you keep your database updated.
if you do a "locate -uv" as root then it will update its database.
"updatedb" will do the same thing. But depending on the size of your harddrive, it might take a while for the updating to finish.

If you don't want to wait, you could try "find"
e.g.
To look for all files with the word "clam" in the directory /usr:

find /usr -iname *clam*
you can use "-name" or "-iname" to specify what to look for. iname will ignore upper and lower case differences.

updatedb is run in a cron job for me nightly. Looking back I think I might have typed claw instead of clam. :-)

Same here. I also have it running as a cron job. Would be nice if there was a file system where every deleted or added file gets written to user database. Would certainly get the updatedb process out of the way.

Hm, that is a neat idea. I bet it would not be so hard to do.
