Hey, does anyone have any suggestions for hardware if I'm building a computer with Linux in mind? Any help on the type of hardware to use would be greatly appreciated. |

We need to know more.
What do you want to do with it?
What do you want to spend?
Rackmount or desktop?
Server or workstation?
x86 or PPC? |

Pretty much I'm seeing if I can create a straight Linux system for every day use.
I don't think I'm ready to try a server just yet, but that would be an idea for later down the road. It should be a desktop, and on either the x86 or AMD64 architecture.
Price is as it is, by the time I actually build this things won't cost what they do now. |

Most general things (like HD, CPU, Motherboard...) should work out of the box for generic/mainstream brands. Things to check specifically is.. soundcard, NIC.
Do a '<chipname/cardname> linux' search on google to get an idea..
For a graphics card, I'd get an nVidia one... ATI is an option to, but I've seen some worrying posts regarding them on this forum.. _________________ Registered Linux user #163029 http://counter.li.org/

I have an Emachines T2542 and it works just fine under Gentoo.
I personally recommend spending more money on the monitor/case, and going cheap on the internal components which you can upgrade later. |

You can find some pretty good prices online at places like www.newegg.com if you haven't been there before. Pricewatch.com is a good search but I find a lot of the listings to be deceptive advertising.
For the rest, I'm going to say the opposite of bombcar's post.
Reuse whatever you can for now to get your new system running. Mice, keyboards, monitors, CD-ROM/R/RW, DVD-ROM/R/RW, old hardrive, floppies (if you have one), even the case can be reused if you want to save a few bucks.
Upgrade the important guts now and then upgrade the other stuff later when you have the $$. |
