Hello

I put gentoo on my t41p and it runs... I never had an ati card though and I seem to fail installing the drivers. I followed the howto on this forum but it seems not to work for me. I have no idea what the problem is and would appreciate it if someone has a solution. I included parts of the x log, my XF86Config, lspci

x quits saying:

I'd really appretiate any help here, cause I got exactly the same problem as ph03n1x! Always no screens found... my XF86Config is about the same (generated with fglrxconfig).
I compiled a 2.6 kernel without DRI and the fglrx module loads on boot...
When I dmesg | grep fglrx i get:

i've just installed my t41p with fglrx seems to run without problems..
are there any other error messages in the XFree86.0.log than the one which has posted?

No no other error messages just:

Even if I try to use just the radeon driver and DRI compiled into the kernel...
I have no idea what the problem could be :(

well now I got it to work :) at least partialy
I emerged ati-drivers 3.7.6 instead of 3.8... xfree seems to work fine now, but console gets messed up :( cant switch back to it, even if I quit xfree its still messy...
Any help on that?

Maybe my post is not 100% on-topic but ... since i'm thinking (or dreaming... :?: )about a Thinkpad t41p .... what about your experience??

I would like to know in particular about performance and stability (and this post it's not so encouraging...).

Im pretty happy 'bout my t41p
its very very silent and pretty fast
good damn monitor
most of the hardware seems to work under linux
( graphics, sound, touchpad, wlan, glan ) havent finnished testing wlan.. still fiddling around with wep..
and havent looked into pcmcia and bluetooth.. both are supposed to work proberly after what i've read

acpi sleep mode doesnt seem to work ( i guess some problems with the graphic driver )
the rest of the acpi thingy work to for me.
check out www.tuxmobil.org for installation instruction

hmm strange @ console.. haven't got any of those problems..
i've got the mm-sources kernel might wanna give it a try

I had this issue with my ThinkPad T41p as well--the Mobility FireGL T2 is a new card, and is only supported by ATI driver versions 3.7.0 and later. When I tried to emerge ati-drivers, it emerged version 3.2.8, so you'll need to go to the ati-drivers directory in your portage tree and emerge a newer driver manually. Hope this helps.

Ok first make sure these are set in your USE flags in /etc/make.conf:

USE="radeon -sis -rage128 -matrox -3dfx -gamma -i8x"

Now cd /usr/src/linux ; make menuconfig

recompile your 2.6 kernel with the following options

device drivers --> character drivers

Make sure you compile in your architecture (intel)

<M> AGPGART
<*> DRM SUPPORT
<> RADEON (leave this unchecked)

under:

device drivers --> Multimedia Devices

do not load anything in here.

And make sure you have MTRR compiled in under processor features...

make && make modules_install

that and a pretty basic config, recompile, mount /boot copy over new kernel, update grub.conf
if necessary.

Make sure agpgart and fglrx are in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

then reboot and type
modules-update ; etc-update ; opengl-update ati


then run /opt/ati/bin/fglrxconfig and configure how you like and make sure to press enter to use the default setting on all of the options after you configure your resolution.

reboot

Let me know if you still have problems after that....
